Belkin have made a big move to create a larger presence in the consumer router and home networking marketing by acquiring the Linksys off Cisco. Linksys is one of the largest and better known brands in the home router and networking market, and was originally acquired by business networking giant Cisco in 2003 to get into the home/consumer market. Cisco in 2011 made the decision to offload its consumer divisions to focus on its core business of Business grade networking and communication technologies.
Belkin haven’t made full details of the acquisition of Linksys available (as the full sale is yet to be finalized) but it has said it will (at least for the time being) continue to grow the Linksys brand and support its existing products. This will give Belkin and Linksys a 30% combined share of the market.
